  • ( ) Police: Former city detective Caputi's grandson admits he used grandfather's credit card after his death last week

    FITCHBURG -- The grandson of former Fitchburg Detective David Caputi -- who died on Jan. 15 -- turned himself in to police Monday night on charges he used his grandfather's credit card after his death, according to Sgt. Glenn Fossa.

    Anthony L. Caputi, 19, of 876 Water St., went to police Monday night, and told police he "did a stupid thing," Fossa said Tuesday.

    Fossa said Caputi told police he took the credit card after his grandfather died last week, and used it in Fitchburg to buy gas, cigarettes and chewing gum from a gas station.

    Caputi may have used the card in other towns and more charges may be coming, Fossa added.

    "He did use it in other jurisdictions," he said.

    The total for the Fitchburg charges comes to $44.47, Fossa said. Caputi is being charged with one misdemeanor count of identity theft, Fossa said. More>>
